Phone tower has Valley storm-ready
HOWLS of protest usually accompany the announcement of a mobile phone tower in the city but you won't hear that from Lockyer Valley residents.
Optus has announced this week it will establish a mobile phone communication tower at Mt Sylvia as well as providing upgrades to Murphys Creek, Helidon and Gatton South.
The upgrades come after loss of communications was experienced during the January floods after which Optus supplied Mt Sylvia residents with satellite phones and a temporary satellite service at Murphys Creek.
Mt Sylvia resident Julie Crust headed up a communications committee working with the Lockyer Valley Regional Council (LVRC) to establish dedicated phone communications in the region.
"With thanks to Optus the Lockyer Valley community for the first time, can feel safe in knowing that they have dedicated and enhanced mobile coverage coming into the storm season," she said.
LVRC Mayor Steve Jones said he commended Optus on establishing a dedicated phone tower in the region after many Lockyer Valley residents were disadvantaged during the floods.
