T-Mobile officials who outlined plans this week for a cellphone antenna in Southeast Portland's Eastmoreland neighborhood faced vocal opposition from residents during a meeting at Duniway Elementary School.

T-Mobile wants to put the antenna atop a utility pole at Southeast 37th Avenue and Ogden Street to provide better service in the neighborhood.

Rod De La Rosa, a T-Mobile spokesman, said before the meeting that more than 100 customers have told the company they want better coverage in Eastmoreland.

But many of the residents who crowded into the school auditorium Tuesday night don't want the antenna in their neighborhood, citing their fears of health risks, tumbling property values and the erosion of the character of the neighborhood.

The Eastmoreland Neighborhood Association has voted against the T-Mobile proposal.

The contentious gathering at Duniway mirrored a meeting last week in Northeast Portland in which T-Mobile laid out a proposal to place an antenna at Northeast Prescott Street and 31st Avenue. Many neighbors in that area also oppose the plan.
