MARSFIELD astronomer George Hobbs, who has been recognised by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science for his passion in communication, doesn’t own a mobile phone.
“I am available by phone, email, Facebook and Skype pretty much all the time, so at last I know when I am walking home that I can have a little bit of time on my own,” Dr Hobbs said.
Dr Hobbs, the Australian Institute of Policy and Science 2011 Young Tall Poppy of the Year for NSW, was given the award and a $4000 cash prize at the Powerhouse Museum last Thursday for “excellent early career research and passion in communication and community engagement”.
He is based at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Astronomy and Space Science Headquarters at Marsfield.
Dr Hobbs, 34, is an expert in pulsars, rapidly rotating neutron stars emitting radiation which can be heard but not seen.
He is also heavily involved in an educational project for students at Parkes radio telescope.
