Private sector welcomes SPTC's mobile phone business

MBABANE – Following the pronouncement by the Prime Minister Sibusiso Dlamini that government supported SPTC in having its own mobile company, the private sector says they welcome it and was long overdue.
Speaking during a breakfast meeting with the Editors Forum, Dlamini said to make this a reality and for competition to exist, Swaziland Post and Telecommunications Corporation would have to first withdraw its shareholding from Swazi MTN.
Swazi MTN is currently the sole mobile phone operator in the country.
Zodwa Mabuza, Chief Executive Officer of the Federation Swaziland Employers and Chamber of Commerce (FSE&CC) said the coming of another mobile company would definitely help the country boost its ailing economy. She said this would come as a result of more foreign direct investment being attracted and retained. Mabuza said MTN’s continued monopoly and consequent lack of competition in the mobile communications sector was the reason for high communication tariffs in the country.
