T-Mobile Offers Free Phone to Keep Customers
21.05.12
In a leaked memo released online by TmoNews , T-Mobile instructed its Renewal=Reward and Retention teams to offer the HTC Wildfire S free -- after a 50 dollar rebate -- to customers who are considering upgrading their unlocked legacy iPhones on T-Mobile to the newly released iPhone 4S on other networks.
T-Mobile is sending out texts to approximately 500,000 customers with the offer, according to the leaked memo.
The effort comes just after Sprint joined AT&T and Verizon in launching the iPhone , leaving T-Mobile as the only "big four" carrier who does not offer the device in their stores. Users who purchase an unlocked iPhone, however, can use T-Mobile service on the phone without a contract.
Those unlocked iPhone customers are the ones T-Mobile hopes to win over with the promotion. Instead of upgrading their older G or 3GS iPhones, those users could opt into a two-year contract with T-Mobile and receive the HTC Wildfire S -- a phone the carrier says is comparable to the iPhone 3GS -- for free. T-Mobile is also promoting the freedom of the open Android market, which offers more third-party apps with fewer restrictions than Apple's App Store.
